How to Measure for Blinds
Getting the right measurements for your blinds is the first and most important step to ensuring they fit perfectly and look great. Whether you’re updating your home or installing blinds for the first time, accurate measurements can make all the difference between a seamless fit and a frustrating experience.

While the process for measuring traditional blinds is relatively straightforward, measuring for integral blinds requires extra precision to ensure a flawless installation. With integral blinds becoming an increasingly popular choice for their modern look and low-maintenance design, it’s essential to get the measurements right from the start.
In this guide, we’ll walk you through the process of measuring both traditional and integral blinds, with a special focus on the unique requirements of integral blinds.
What you Will Need to Measure for Blinds
Before you begin measuring, it’s essential to have the right tools to ensure accuracy. Taking precise measurements will save you time, money, and potential frustration down the line. Here’s what you’ll need:
Steel Tape Measure: A sturdy, retractable tape measure is the best option for precise measurements. Avoid fabric or flexible tape measures as they can stretch or warp, leading to inaccurate results.
Notepad and Pen/Pencil: Keep these handy to write down your measurements immediately. Don’t rely on memory.
Step Ladder: If you need to measure tall windows or doors, ensure you have a safe way to reach higher areas.
Glass Thickness Gauge (for Integral Blinds): A simple tool to measure the thickness of your glazing, crucial for fitting integral blinds.
Smartphone or Camera (Optional): Taking a photo of the window or door with your measurements marked can help when placing your order.
Tips for Accuracy
Measure in Millimetres: Use millimetres for maximum precision, as most blind manufacturers prefer these measurements.
Measure Twice: Always double-check your measurements to ensure they are consistent and correct.
Check for Obstructions: Look for any handles, locks, or other obstructions that might affect the fit of your blinds, especially for traditional blinds that hang outside the recess.
How to Measure for Integral Blinds
Accurate measurements are crucial for the proper fit and function of integral blinds, which are sealed within double-glazed units. Follow these steps meticulously to ensure precision:
Step 1: Measure the Width
When measuring for integral blinds, always stand inside the building and look at the window from the interior. You can then identify the bead where the frame meets the glass.
Measure across from the external edge of the bead to the external edge of the opposite bead.
Record the measurement and deduct 10mm.
Step 2: Measure the Height
Using the same method, measure the external bead-to-bead distance vertically.
Again record the measurement and deduct 10mm.
Step 3 Measure the Thickness of the Glass
The thickness of your glass is an important factor when ordering integral blinds. To ensure the correct measurements are taken, we would recommend letting one of our engineers take this measurement as part of the quotation process.
How to Measure for Traditional Blinds
Measuring for traditional blinds is a straightforward process, but accuracy is key to ensuring a snug fit. The steps will vary depending on whether you want your blinds to sit inside the window recess (recess fit) or outside it (exact fit). Follow the guide below to measure correctly for each option.
Recess Fit (Inside the Window Frame)
This style is ideal if you want your blinds to fit neatly within the window frame for a minimalist, streamlined look.
Step 1: Measure the Width
Use your tape measure to measure the width of the window recess at three points: the top, middle, and bottom.
Record the smallest measurement to ensure the blind fits snugly inside the recess without obstruction.
Step 2: Measure the Height
Measure the height of the recess at three points: the left, centre, and right.
Again, take the smallest measurement to avoid any fitting issues.
Step 3: Check for Obstructions
Look for any handles, locks, or protruding fixtures that might interfere with the operation of the blinds. If obstructions are present, consider adjusting the measurements or opting for an exact fit.
Exact Fit (Outside the Window Frame)
This option is better if you want to maximise light blockage or cover imperfections around the window frame.
Step 1: Measure the Width
Measure the width of the window recess and add extra space on both sides (typically 50-100mm on each side) to ensure full coverage.
Step 2: Measure the Height
Measure the height of the recess and add extra space above and below the window (usually 50-100mm each) for complete coverage.
Step 3: Consider the Placement
Decide where you want the brackets to be installed and ensure there’s enough wall space around the window to accommodate the blind.
Top Tip: Don’t forget to measure twice to ensure an accurate measurement.
