How to Measure for Integral Blinds: A Homeowner’s Guide
When considering integral blinds, measuring accurately is essential to ensure they fit seamlessly within your existing window frames. Here, we’ll walk you through the steps to measure for integral blinds to make this process easy and effective. And remember, Eclipse always recommends a professional assessment for the best results; a small investment that could save you costly corrections later on.

Why Measuring Correctly for Integral Blinds Matters
Integral blinds are a great addition to modern double glazed units, providing sleek, internal shading that never needs dusting or adjusting. However, for these blinds to operate smoothly within the glass pane, the dimensions must be precise. Improper measurements can lead to poorly fitting blinds that don’t operate as they should, potentially compromising your window’s thermal efficiency. To measure for integral blinds correctly, you’ll need a standard measuring tape and a keen eye for detail. The key is to measure millimetre perfect dimensions while understanding where and how to take those measurements from.
Step 1: Measuring the Width
When measuring for integral blinds, always stand inside the building and look at the window from the interior.
- Identify the bead—the angled section of the frame that meets the windowpane. The bead plays a crucial role in your measurements, as it is where you will take the initial points.
- Measure from the external edge of the bead on one side (let’s call it point A) to the external edge of the bead on the other side (point B). This is your width measurement from A to B.
- Record this measurement in millimetres and, importantly, deduct 10mm from this figure. The deduction accounts for the internal spacing and fit required for integral blinds.
Example: If your width measurement from A to B is 860mm, your ordered width would be 850mm.
Note that when ordering, window fitters always provide the width measurement first. So for your double glazing pane, you’ll start with this adjusted width dimension.
Step 2: Measuring the Height
With your width recorded, it’s time to measure the height.
- Using the same method as above, measure from the external edge of the bead on the top (point C) down to the external edge of the bead at the bottom (point D). This is your height measurement from C to D.
- Once again, record this measurement in millimetres and deduct 10mm from the total for an accurate fit.
Example: If your height from C to D is 880mm, the adjusted height would be 870mm.
This adjustment is essential to ensure your integral blinds fit within the double glazed panel. With both width and height measurements adjusted, you now have the correct dimensions for your window blind order. In this example, you would order an 850mm width by 870mm height double glazing pane.
Why Professional Measurement Matters
While it’s possible to measure for integral blinds yourself, Eclipse strongly recommends arranging a home visit from one of our engineers or another qualified window installer. Measuring the width and height is only one aspect of the fitting process; an accurate thickness measurement of the glass is equally important. Correct glass thickness ensures your new integral blinds will fit smoothly within the existing frames and function as intended.
A professional engineer will not only verify your width and height measurements but will also measure the thickness of the glass accurately. For £60, this service guarantees peace of mind, as incorrect thickness can lead to problems when installing blinds, including operational issues and ineffective seals. Plus, Eclipse deducts the cost of this visit from your final blind purchase, making it a cost effective option for accuracy and quality assurance.
Avoiding Common Mistakes When Measuring for Integral Blinds
One common mistake when homeowners measure for integral blinds is skipping the 10mm deduction. Without this allowance, the blinds may be too large for the glass pane, causing issues with fitting. Another mistake is underestimating the need for professional measurement—getting the glass thickness right is crucial, and miscalculating it can lead to problems down the road. This small upfront investment in professional help can prevent the hassle and expense of replacing improperly measured blinds.
